The first child marriage-free zone in Pakistan was announced at the #UpForSchool rally in New York by Baela Jamil, Director of Programmes at Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi.The initial funding for the project has been supported by the Global Business Coalition for Education and it will form the first of a series of initiatives to help keep girls in school in Pakistan.

Before we can start blaming Islam for all the ills of the Muslim World let us revisit the idea of modernity. Modernity is the term given to the human condition that is marked by certain privileged organizational principles namely the nation state as political unit, liberal democracy as the political ideology, capitalism as the economic method, human rights and pluralism as key elements of modern ethos and science and rationality as the dominant epistemology. As first Europe and then other nations adopted these principles they became “advanced and modern” while the rest remained “backward and traditional”.
