Comment by Dr Zahid Aziz on yesterday item: The First Muslim Missionary in England
In the "News around the Muslim World on Saturday 28 June 2014" circulated to us, we see the following item from the BBC about Quilliam and his Liverpool Mission which terminated in 1908:
On a side of this item, there is the following comment by one Rahila Bano of the BBC Asian network:
"Abdullah Quilliam is seen as a positive role model by British Muslims, especially the younger generation.
He fought against injustice and slavery and encouraged everyone to pray together at his mosque, which included followers of Islam from around the world who would arrive at the Liverpool docks and visit the place of worship.
He transcended sectarianism and was known for his regular interaction with non-Muslims.
Some feel that no one person in the UK could be pointed out, during recent times, as someone who represents Islam and what Muslims should be.
It is felt that Sheikh-ul-Islam could potentially fulfil this important role by the legacy he has left behind."
[End quote]
But Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din has all the qualities mentioned here, such as "encouraged everyone to pray together at his mosque" and "transcended sectarianism and was known for his regular interaction with non-Muslims". he represented "Islam and what Muslims should be".
And, of course, Quilliam, after returning to England as Professor H.M. Leon in 1914, worked with the Woking Muslim Mission, and wrote extensively in The Islamic Review, till he died in 1932.
Quilliam ran his Liverpool mission for 19 years (1889-1908), and he also worked with Woking for the same length of time.
About his second life, the BBC report only mentions that he returned to England "settling in Woking, where he died in 1932".
